Many forget that every muscle in the human body is attached to its corresponding bone by tendons.
Many forget that every muscle in the human body is attached to its corresponding bone by tendons. Tendons are therefore critical, and also have a crucial role to play in overall performance. For example, in a healthy adult, the flexor tendon in the feet can displace eight times the weight of a typical human body. Conversely, if a tendon is damaged or weakened, performance - and indeed sometimes movement - can be dramatically affected. We can all name a pro footballer or athlete being out for months on end due to a tendon injury. When tendons are deliberately strengthened, the performance of the entire Musculo-skeletal system improves. Strengthening tendons is generally achieved through long-hold exercises, such as extending a limb for a prolonged period of time. When the muscles’ ability to support the limb fails, tendons continue to do the work, and through repetition of such exercises, tendon strength is improved.
